HISTORIC POINT BASSE CITIZENS MEETING
March 7, 2023
Larry called the meeting to order at 6:00. These in attendance were Mike, Don, Johann,
Tina, Larry, Dawn, David & Linda Weege, Skip, Doreen and Joni.
Winter Feast
The event was a success – 180 served, took in over $3,000 – the biggest Winter
Feast yet.
Next year a few changes will be made regarding cleanup, etc. The tablecloths
are being cleaned by Paula.
Sugar Bush
Will tap the trees on Monday. Dawn and Joni will be in the house. Jackie will be
taking tickets. Bill, Larry, Linda, Dave, Don, Ken, Doreen and maybe Johann will be
there. There was more discussion regarding staffing for this event.
Would like to have the mimeograph machine working in the School House.
There was some discussion about this.
Mike and Tina will help with advertising on WFHR.
Emergency Procedures
There will be training on the emergency procedures before the school groups
start coming out to the site. Tin has a call in to arrange the training with a law
enforcement officer.
Pinery Road Waterway
This is a group that is out of the Wausau area that is working on a “waterway” or
way to navigate from northern Wisconsin down the Wisconsin River to the southern part
of the state. We would like to be a place where people can stop as a destination on the
Pinery Road Waterway. Places where the campers could be discussed as was adding
pit toilets. Dave expounded on the St. Croix group and how they do operate this type of
activity. There is a lot more to discuss as time goes on but this would be good
advertising for Historic Point Basse.
Grants
A lot of grants are being worked on right now. If you know of any grants, please
let Tina know about it.
Old World Wisconsin Trip
We would like to take a trip to Old World Wisconsin after Pioneer Fest. The
purpose of this trip would be to learn but also to study and explore the “walk-in” chimney
in the German house. We would like to have a summer kitchen/smokehouse someday
and maybe use some of the design in the building. There was discussion about this
and there will be more discussion at future meetings.
Don mentioned putting a full porch on the cabin in addition to the ramp. We have the
material and just need to do it.
Skip looked into printing the Wakely Family Tree. Tina has put it into a computer
program and printed it out. She will be going to a Genealogical Conference and will see
what they can do. There was discussion about this.
Mike is getting the awards together for the Annual Meeting to be held in April and we
are still in need of a speaker.
School groups are scheduled for May 9, 10, 12, and 19
th so far. There are 2 or 3
groups that have not set definite dates. Doreen emphasized having a headcount of the
students.
Don would like to set aside a time when the Visitor Center can be discussed at length.
There was some discussion.
The Cranberry Blossom Festival and the Farmer’s Market would be great advertising
opportunities for Historic Point Basse this summer.
The plan is to have the roof on the Pavilion by early April.
Skip will have the power supply in the Bunkhouse by mid-April.
Mike made a motion to adjourn, seconded by Tina. Meeting adjourned at 6:50 p.m.
Respectfully Submitted,
Joni Wolf, Secretary
