Historic Point Basse Citizen’s Meeting

January 2, 2024

The meeting was called to order at 6:10. These in attendance were Larry, Mike, John, Don, Skip, Tom Brehmer, Paula, Tina and Joni.

ICE HARVEST –

This event will be determined by whether there is ice and by whether the Fisheree is happening.  This may have to be pushed off towards the end of the month – will play it by ear.

Membership forms were discussed.  Lifetime members should get a different letter each year than the annual members.  We will talk to Dawn regarding changes.  This will also be discussed further at the Board meeting.  It was suggested laminating the membership cards for the lifetime members.

Sugar Bush date to be corrected to March 16 and Harvest Fair to September 7.

SNOWSHOE EVENT –

This will be held during the day and not at night.  11 – 4 is the suggested time.  We will need volunteers to help. Those that bring their own snowshoes will be $3.00 admission.  There was some discussion about this.  Need to clarify the use of trails – public vs event.  At the event there are guides, a bonfire and cider.  No charge for kids 3 or under.

We want to make sure the vendor is paid properly for our use of the snowshoes. Animals will be allowed on a leash.

The ticket booth can be used for sign-in, admission and snowshoe rental.  We need a phone number for those renting and how many pair are rented.  Also need someone to adjust the shoes.  This will be placed at the top of the hill or by the maintenance shed and the bonfire.

Skip has a snowmobile, and we need to have a sled available in case someone gets hurt.  Don needs logs for the bonfire and benches placed around the bonfire.  Need maps to let people know where to go.  The trails will not be groomed.

This will be revisited at another meeting for this event to be held on January 13 at McMillan Library – 9 – 11.  This will be an advertised event.  Bonnie will be given information for posters.  We will not be wearing costumes for this event as there are not enough cold weather pieces to wear.

WINTER FEAST –

There is room in the freezers and refrigerators for more food in the schoolhouse.  There is coon, venison, and beaver already in there.  Still need room for ham.   Tom B met with Scott and Jackie, and we have a tentative menu.  Tina has procured salmon.  Pickles and coleslaw are already done.  Ann Rozner is going to do the relish table/cider.

Tom has a list of volunteers.  This will be finalized on the 22nd at the meeting.  Posters and tickets are being made.  Tom wants Channel 12 out of Rhinelander to report on an event in preparation for future events.  He will contact Jeff Weller to be on “Up North” in this regard.  He will do a 10 minute “commercial” to let people know what we educate kids with our school groups – sometimes up to 1,000 per year.  Tina has a Zoom account to help us do this.  Tickets can be purchased in advance on the website through PayPal.  We also need to contact Chad Decker from Channel 7 as he promotes non-profit events – see if he can come.  There was discussion about this.  Have 8 raffle baskets and need more basket items.  We have 2 specialty knives that can be in a silent auction – starting at $25.  Johann has bowls.  Need 6 – 8 more tablecloths.  Tom and Scott would like to get a few more pans for next year.  Larry suggested a Used Restaurant Equipment group.

SCHOOL GROUPS –

1 group with 16 students from Tomorrow River signed up for May 15 either in April or May.  We need to have more volunteers for the School Groups.

Need a new DVD made for the Scout Groups – 10 – 12 min. long.  Tina can put together a Power Point presentation and asked Skip what should be included.

WORK GROUP/PLANS –

Greg Weeg cleaned out the blacksmith shop to the point where the floor could be completed.  It now has an entire wood floor.  The stove can now be used for warming.

Wallie Webster passed – need to get a sympathy card to Mike.

BUILDING NUMBERS –

Don brought a sample of a number that still needs to have color.  These are for Emergency Government.

OUTDOOR COOKING CLASS –

            Will be held in April

There will be a felting class on May 11 – Saturday – maybe w/Nekoosa Library.  $15 will be the charge.

Blacksmith Class w/John Berg – Thursday and Friday in June.

Ann Rozner – foraging class in the fall

Sheep to Shawl by Victoria on June 17.

Tina created a newsletter which will be emailed to everyone.  It is FANTASTIC!

Motion to adjourn was made by Joni – seconded by Mike.

The meeting was adjourned at about 7:15 p.m.
