Wakely's Ice Harvest

The sale of ice was the 3rd U.S. export during the late part of 1800s. Cotton and grain were the two leading exports. Wisconsin ice was shipped to Milwaukee for the brewing of beer, to Chicago to cool meat slaughtered in the slaughter houses, and all the way to South and New Orleans where it used to cool drinks during the hot humid days of Summer. The ice was packed in sawdust, something Wisconsin had a lot of, to preserve it. Good ice would last well into the summer. If enough was harvested, until next Winter.

Come out to the lake and watch as we harvest the ice. Spectators are encouraged to help cut the ice and to remove it from the lake if they wish.

You are also welcome to come out to the site on Wakely Road in Nekoosa from noon to 2:00 and watch us store the ice in the ice shed.

Below are some of the activities form last year.

Loading blocks of ice to be transported to the ice house.

Sawing the ice.

Sawing the ice into blocks.

Pulling a block of ice from the water.

Holding on to the puller so he does not fall into the lake.

Putting a block of ice onto the sawdust in the ice house.

Sliding a block of ice on a board to get it into the ice house.

Shoveling the sawdust to be paced around the ice.

Loading blocks of ice onto the truck.

Pushing the sawdust around the ice blocks.

Each year Historic Point Basse harvests ice to cool drinks and make ice cream at its summer events. The ice is then packed in sawdust in an ice house at the site.
